  • 20-Jun-2021
  • 7:45 AM - 11:00 AM
  • GPS address, close to this address: 17000 Poway Rd, Poway CA 92064

Date & Time: Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 8:00 - 11:00 AM
(we will meet at 7:45 AM and hit the trail sharp at 8:00)

The AIAP hike in this month will be at Iron Mountain-Poway. The mountain core is composed of batholithic and granodioritic rock. Some of the boulders are reddish from iron deposits and possibly from the formerly-overlying red Bedford Canyon formation. Soils on the mountain include decomposed granodiorite and iron rich soils derived from iron deposits in the fractures. Curiously enough, Iron Mountain contains some of the same endemic plants that are found on gabbro soils.

This is a moderate hike. The trails are well marked and maintained. The views from the peak are well worth the effort. This hike is about 6.5 miles, round trip, and likely takes about 4 hours. Please bring enough water and wear hiking boots. For more information about Iron Mountain please watch the following video:
