مهرنوش مزارعی در تهران متولد شد و در سال ۱۳۵۸ برای ادامه‌ی تحصیل به امریکا آمد. از او تا بحال چهار مجموعه داستان کوتاه، یک مجموعه ترجمه نمایشنامه و یک رمان منتشر شده است
برگزیده‌ای از داستانهای او با عنوان «غریبه‌ای در اتاق من» در سال ۱۳۸۳ در ایران به چاپ رسید و کاندیدای دریافت جایزه‌ی بنیاد هوشنگ گلشیری و جایزه منتقدان و نویسندگان مطبوعاتی شد.داستان «سنگام» از این مجموعه در «هشتاد سال داستان‌نویسی ایران» معرفی و در کتاب «نقش82» بعنوان یکی از 10 داستان برتر سال به چاپ رسید. داستان «غریبه‌ای در اتاق من» در کتاب درسی «داستان کوتاه ایران» بعنوان یک نمونه برتر از داستانهای مدرن معاصر فارسی معرفی گردید
