Lecture Title:

“Woman, Life, Freedom after one Year and under the shadow of the latest horrific wars”

Abstract:  

The “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement (known also as Mahsa/Movement) has

been reflective of an “existentialist moment” in Iran especially among the younger generation of women and men of urban middle and working classes. The movement is strongly expressive of a deep yearning for individual and national liberation and reclaiming of a dignified “normal life” and self determination. While a novel split from the 43 years of repressive and oppressive Islamist ideological and political establishments; at the same time, many of its demands and values are rooted in Iran’s recent history of over 120 years of striving for human/women’s rights, the rule of law, democracy, liberty, justice and pursuit of happiness, progress, and prosperity. The intersectional and multidimensional aspects of this Movement will be discussed. This talk, therefore, will end with a brief look at the implications of the present regional/global conflicts (Ukraine/Russia and Israel/ Hamas wars) for the prospects of socio-political changes in Iran and the MENA region.
